People often ask me if I teach workshops and the answer is … Yes, yes I do - and I love doing it as well!
I have developed a fun two day workshop packed full of techniques such as resin embedding, freehand embroidery and of course my signature sculptural embroidery technique. I will be running the workshop twice this year in two great locations. Both are in NSW (sorry for those that are further out, I will get to you one day) and I am really looking forward to both workshops.
A little bit about the workshop:
The sewing machine will be transformed into an unconventional drawing tool and you will be in control of every stitch allowing your creativity and imagination to run wild. By stitching onto a combination of paper, woven and water-soluble fabrics we will create a range of embroidered samples experimenting with the possibilities of this technique. This workshop will also provide an introduction to resin casting as we embed small objects into clear resin blocks to form a range of resin sculptures and small jewellery pieces. On the second day we will take this embroidery process further by creating densely stitched networks of embroidery onto water-soluble fabric. These will then be molded around various objects to give them shape creating freestanding embroidered sculptures. We will also explore various mounting techniques to bring your embroidered artworks to life.
The important stuff (dates and costs)
Workshop 1:
14-15th June, at NCAC, Newcastle NSW Australia.
Cost: $220* (includes lunch and morning tea)
Bookings: Contact Timeless Textiles.
Workshop #2:
11-12th October, Go Create New England NSW Australia,
Cost: $200*.
Bookings: Contact Go Create
*Please not that there is a material fee for these workshops on top of the advertised workshop fee (this covers all the materials that we use in the workshop that are not readily available - such as resin etc.)
What do I need to bring?
First and foremost you will need your own sewing machine (with a freehand embroidery or darning foot), that's the most important thing. There are a handful of other bits and pieces you will need to bring along but you will get a list outlining all of this when you book your spot in a workshop. It's all pretty basic stuff that you probably already have and if not it will be easy to pick up at your local sewing shop. I will provide all the tricky things like resin and specialised moulds so you don't have to worry about those aspects (that's what your materials fee covers).
Feedback from ATASDA workshop 2013
Had the best weekend at a workshop ever. Loved the new techniques and generous teacher. Found it brilliant to take home several completed projects.
We covered a lot (without being overwhelmed), managed to take home a framed completed piece worthy of praise.
I have left this workshop with so many ideas to follow through. All the equipment used was also easily attainable or we already had.
Relaxed, competent, giving, learnt two different techniques, plenty of time for each.
Excellent tutor, generous with her skills and expertise.
A fabulous class.
I thought Meredith was excellent. We achieved a lot in the workshop and she explained things very well.
Fabulous, generous, knowledgeable. Would attend again.
Nice to have a young tutor excited about machine embroidery.
Chuffed at coming away with a framed finished piece. Brilliant!!
Places are still available in both workshops so if you want to come along and join the fun pick the one that's closest to you and get in contact with the workshop provider to secure your spot.
Looking forward to seeing you at a workshop soon
Meredith :)
