 A week long workshop with the artist Meredith Woolnough was an absolute treat. She inspired and encouraged her students to step with her into the intricate world of nature and to see the possibilities of her machine stitching techniques. Meredith’s class was well resourced;  a printed handout of succinct notes and technical information was complimented by actual marine samples and boxes of beautifully stitched machine thread samples… that she encouraged students to handle. It was obvious to me (a Visual Arts teacher) that Meredith had teaching qualifications, numerous academic achievements as well as a highly successful artistic practise. This enabled her to meet the quite varied needs of our class, from novice, to practising artists, whilst managing the group dynamics so that all participants had successful outcomes. That all participants were encouraged to work individually on personal interests, that evolved into unique  stitched embroideries mounted ready for exhibition was a credit to her. Being a knowledgeable and successful artist does not always equate into ‘a good teacher’ but Meredith ticked all boxes there and her happy and friendly demeanour, excited, nurturing, encouraging and generous approach was enjoyed by all of her students. The icing for me was that her recently released book “Organic Embroidery” supported so beautifully the learning in class as well as inspiring and  informing me. That resulted in me read the whole book in one evening at the retreat.  Thankyou Meredith Woolnough. Your future looks bright as a young teacher in this diverse and creative industry.

I recently participated in a five-day workshop with Meredith Woolnough. I thoroughly enjoy it and learnt heaps. Meredith worked well with us both individually and collectively. She is an amazing teacher who is very generous with her time, sharing all her tips and tricks and skills honed over years of practice. I have been lucky to attend a couple of Meredith’s workshops as well as spending an afternoon with her while she was artist in residence at The Glasshouse in Port Macquarie. Meredith is very clear and precise in how she conducts her workshops.  She is very clear with her steps and is always happy to assist by demonstrating or drawing images to describe what is required.  If you are having doubts about the piece you are working on, Meredith will spend time with you discussing the piece and assist in the planning process.  You are never left alone during one of her workshops.  She is more than happy to assist in any way she can.  By the end of my first workshop with Meredith, I walked away feeling as though I had accomplished something worthwhile made a friend at the same time. I would thoroughly recommend attending any workshop that Meredith offers.
