GIANT CORAL ATOLL

Embroidery thread and pins on paper (2025)

105 × 105 cm (framed size - framed in a white box frame behind museum glass)

In Giant Coral Atoll, I continue my exploration of natural structures through the delicate language of thread. Using a freehand embroidery technique, I draw with a domestic sewing machine onto a water-soluble fabric. Once the base dissolves, only a network of intricate stitches remains—an openwork lace held in tension and preserved like a scientific specimen within a shadowbox.

This piece references the circular formations of coral atolls, echoing both the structure of reef systems and the iris of a human eye. The form invites a dual reading: a view from above, as if peering down at a living island ring, and a gaze inward, reflecting the interconnectedness between human life and the marine world.

Stitch by stitch, I build complex forms that speak to the fragility and resilience of ecosystems. Beneath its beauty, Giant Coral Atoll holds an environmental message—a quiet call to notice what is vanishing and to consider the delicate systems that bind us all.
